    Surface slabs formed during the most storm cycle lie upon hard old snow surfaces at the upper elevations and weak old snow surfaces at the mid elevations. These slabs have depths of 12 to 30 inches and could be human triggered on steep wind loaded slopes.

    The human triggering of slab avalanches that lie upon persistent layers of weak snow will most likely occur at the mid and lower elevations where these slab lie upon layers of surface hoar and a generally faceted snowpack. These slabs could have depths of one to three feet. At the upper elevations persistent weak layers are deeper in the snowpack and therefor harder to trigger. If triggered, however these deeper hard slabs would carry severe consequences.

Avalanche Discussion

Western Wyoming will remain cold and cloudy with areas of light snowfall that will increase during the day on Monday. The higher elevations are expected to receive an inch of new snow overnight, three inches during the day and four inches Monday night. Temperatures will remain in the single digits and teens. Winds will be light from the southwest at 5 to 10 miles per hour.Soft surface slabs comprised of the recent new snow can be human triggered with crowns depths of one to three feet. In areas with poor snowpack structure these slabs could involve older snow with depths to five feet. These deeper persistent slabs are more likely to be triggered in the Continental Divide/Togwotee Pass and Southwest Trails/ Greys River areas where the general avalanche hazard is forecast to be CONSIDERABLE. The general avalanche hazard in the Teton Range is forecast to be MODERATE.
