Kernpunkte

DANGEROUS and UNSTABLE avalanche conditions continue to exist in the Tetons. At the upper, mid, and high range of low elevations, two days of warm termperatures have resulted in a hardening of the snow surface, which may give backcountry users a false sense of security. This hard snow surface is the top layer of slabs up to four feet in depth that lie upon a very weak layer of faceted snow and crusts. These slabs could be triggered today by backcountry enthusiasts when either enough load is applied to the snowpack or a hard to predict trigger point is found. At the lowest elevations, avalanches are unlikely in the shallow snowpack.
