The avalanche danger will begin at Moderate and could rise to Considerable if heavy snowfall arrives this afternoon. Rapid accumulation of snow will make triggering an avalanche likely in steep terrain. In addition, beware of dense wind slabs that have formed in loaded terrain over the past three days. These slabs could be large, and human triggering is still possible. Carefully evaluate the incoming snowfall and be on the lookout for unstable areas of older, wind drifted snow.

    A passing storm is expected to bring heavier snowfall to the Tetons this afternoon with 6 inches of accumulation possible in the upper elevations by evening. Winds are forecasted to be light and temperatures are expected to rise into the upper 20s throughout the day. Expect sensitive soft slabs 6-8” deep to develop in steep terrain by late afternoon if the weather forecast verifies. These slabs will be deepest and most sensitive in exposed terrain where the wind has formed new drifts. Watch cracking and collapsing as you travel today. These are useful signs of instability with this avalanche problem.

    In addition, wind slabs that have formed over the past three days are sitting on slick crusts, and may still be sensitive to the weight of a rider in steep, upper elevation terrain on north and east aspects. These slabs will feel dense and have formed on features like convex roll overs, or cross loaded gullies. New snow may obscure visual clues of these slabs. Therefore, it will be important to evaluate steep terrain carefully before committing. Avalanches breaking in older, wind drifted snow could be deep enough to bury or injure a person.

Avalanche Discussion

The deep persistent slab was removed from the problem list today. The last confirmed dry snow avalanche involving weak snow that formed in December occurred naturally on March 5th after the Tetons received over 9 inches of snow water equivalent (SWE) in 10 days. The last confirmed human triggered avalanche involving these layers occurred on February 10th. Nearly 300 inches of snow has fallen since January 4th, burying the weak December snow well over 6 feet deep in most locations. This slab has grown incredibly strong over the past two months making the likelihood of triggering a deep slab avalanche, even with a large trigger, extremely low. Consequently, it is no longer considered an “avalanche problem” given the current conditions. Make no mistake, the weak snow grains at the base of the snowpack are still weak. We will probably see additional avalanches involving this layer, however, they will most likely come in the form of wet snow avalanches. Wet slabs involving December snow will require a prolonged period of above freezing temperatures and be on our radar as we get deeper into spring. For now, continue to practice safe travel habits and give steep, unsupported, north facing terrain a healthy dose of skepticism.

The Colorado Avalanche Information Center, the Avalanche Research Program at Simon Fraser University, and the U.S. National Science Foundation National Center for Atmospheric Research are researching how skiers, snowmobilers, snowshoers, ice climbers, and anyone else who travels in the backcountry interpret avalanche forecast information.
