The snowpack is still adjusting to the excessive load of new snow and wind transport from yesterday. Backcountry travelers should approach avalanche terrain with caution, assessing the snowpack carefully before committing to leeward, wind loaded slopes and steep areas that are receiving sun. Maintain your awareness as you travel and watch for signs of instability such as roller balls, shooting cracks, collapsing and whoompfing.

    Yesterday, W and SW wind transported new snow onto leeward, easterly aspects at the ideal speed for building wind slabs. You are likely to trigger an avalanche on this problem in steep terrain. Wind slabs may also be present mid-slope in north or south facing gullies because of cross-loading. Steep couloirs, unsupported slopes above or around cliffs, or convex break overs will be areas of most concern.

    Evaluating and navigating avalanche terrain with caution will decrease the likelihood that you trigger a wind slab today. Hedge your bets from encountering this problem by traveling in low angle terrain and watching for signs of instability: shooting cracks, collapsing and whoompfing snow.

    Due to warmer temperatures and the potential for sunshine, there is a possibility of wet loose avalanches as free water from melt weakens the new snow. Watching for early signs of surface instability like roller balls and avoiding steep areas that receive sunlight, especially above terrain traps, is your best line of defense against this problem.

Avalanche Discussion

The storm has passed but the new and wind transported snow that it brought to the forecast area still needs time to become acquainted with our existing snowpack structure. A foot of new snow, an inch of snow water equivalent (SWE), or heavy wind transport in the past 24 hours are all red flags that warn of excessive loading. To put this storm into perspective and highlight the lingering dangerous avalanche conditions, we have received over two feet of new snow, nearly an inch and a half of SWE, and heavy wind transport in the past 24 hours. 

Yesterday, forecasters observed natural avalanches on steep road cuts and found fresh cornices breaking easily under body weight, breaking onto leeward aspects and entraining the dry, loose snow.

With the above in mind, practice patience in or near avalanche terrain as there is plenty of powder to enjoy on low angle slopes.
