Kernpunkte

The chance of triggering a large slab avalanche on certain aspects at the mid and upper elevations cannot be ruled out. Avoid very steep terrain near cliffs or rocky areas that have a northerly component in aspect. Low elevations lack sufficient snow coverage for avalanche concerns.

Weak snow formed during a dry period in November is well preserved within the snowpack on west through north through east facing terrain. Over the last week, slabs that lie over this weak snow have become less sensitive, although a chance for a single person to trigger a hard slab avalanche with depths of 1-3 feet continues to exist. These slabs could release after a slope has been tracked several times when a particularly thin, weak spot is impacted. Snowpack evaluation on a specific slope is the best method to determine its stability.

Avalanche Discussion

The likelihood of triggering a slab avalanche continues to decrease, although it is doing so at a very slow pace. Field observations continue to prove that the weak layer is well preserved, even though recent avalanche activity has been minimal.  Noting current snow surfaces is important to better navigate future avalanche problems when new snow does arrive. Even though temperatures have been warm, and crusts have formed on south facing terrain, faceted near surface snow and surface hoar can be found on most aspects at all elevations, particularly in colder, shaded areas.
