Triggering a large avalanche is still possible on weak layers buried 1-3 feet. Areas with the highest likelihood are on steep, previously wind loaded terrain above 9200’. Choose terrain wisely to stay away steep slopes in consequential zones such as rocky areas and terrain traps.

    Poor snowpack structure exists fairly widespread on Togwotee where weak facets are buried beneath a cohesive slab making avalanches possible. If triggered, hard slab depths will be 1-3 feet with higher volumes found in upper elevations above 10,000’ in wind loaded terrain. Due to strong wind events, the snowpack depth varies significantly across different aspects above 9000’. Therefore, previous tracks are not a good indication of slope stability. All it takes is hitting that one sensitive spot to trigger the entire slope. Be suspicious of any terrain where the consequences of triggering an avalanche are high such as steep slopes above terrain traps. Do not let the stubborn character of these avalanches deter your judgment. Practice safe terrain choice.

    This persistent slab avalanche that occured on Barbers Point is a great example of steep terrain to avoid above trees and hazards where consequences are high. 

Avalanche Discussion

The snowpack on Togwotee remains relatively unchanged. Weak layers are still buried beneath a hard slab and still possible to trigger a large avalanche. The slopes I’m suspicious of today are those on shaded aspects above 35° steep. All those tight, steep drainages across all aspects and elevations that lead into terrain traps as well as slopes off open, exposed ridgelines are areas I wouldn’t want to test my luck. These layers are trending more stubborn the longer dry, calm weather pattern proceeds. Obvious signs of instability are becoming less frequent. This doesn’t mean you won’t trigger an avalanche, it simply means it’s harder to resist the urge to travel on steep slopes. Stay conservative and wait until the confidence of a stable snowpack increases.
