The National Weather Service has issued a Winter Weather Advisory effective until noon. Rapid loading has occurred overnight. If moderate to heavy snowfall continues through the morning hours, the general avalanche hazard is expected to rise to Considerable at the higher elevations. At the mid and upper elevations, skiers and riders could easily trigger newly developed wind slabs that could reach depths of 18 inches by this evening. The chance for skiers and riders to trigger large persistent slab avalanches will slowly rise as weight continues to be added to the underlying weak layers of faceted snow. These deeper slabs could also step down from the release of a wind slab. Monitor the weather, and be willing to alter your travel plans if conditions warrant. Shallow slides involving the new snow could also occur at the lower elevations.

    Moderate to heavy snowfall began before midnight and continued through the early morning hours. Southerly ridgetop winds ranging between 15 and 25 miles per hour accompanied this snowfall, and new winds slabs have formed in leeward terrain. The slabs are developing on a variety of surfaces which include surface hoar, near surface facets, sun crusts and wind pack. Skiers and riders will be likely to trigger these small to large wind slabs throughout the day.

    By this evening, a total of one to one and a half inches of snow water equivalent could be added to persistent weak layers of faceted snow that reside one to four feet beneath the new snowfall. There is a significant amount of spatial variability associated with these weak layers, and it is difficult to predict where backcountry travelers could trigger these dangerous slabs. Conservative terrain choices will be your simplest tool for avoiding these large avalanches.

Avalanche Discussion

The next disturbance will approach later this evening and bring another round of moderate snow. The steadiest snowfall is forecast to fall from late tonight into tomorrow morning with lighter snow after that. Six to ten inches of new snow are possible by tomorrow evening. Temperatures will be cooler. They will be in the 20s. Southwest winds will decrease to 20 with gusts to 30 miles per hour.Winds slabs will continue to form on leeward aspects and lie upon good sliding surfaces. Slab depths are likely to increase to 1 to 2 feet in areas with lesser new snow totals and 2 to 3 feet in areas most favored by the recent snowfall. These slabs are likely to be easily triggered by humans. Natural releases are possible. The new snow and winds are also increasing the load on persistent weak layers that are more deeply buried in the snowpack and in areas where the snowpack is shallower and has poor structure. Persistent slab avalanches 2 to 4 feet in depth could fail on weak layers of faceted snow due to the weight of a person or due to the release of a surface slab. The general avalanche hazard is expected to be considerable in areas that have received the most new snow since the start of this storm cycle on Saturday night. Those areas include the mid and upper elevations of the Teton forecast zone. The general avalanche hazard in the Greys River, Togwotee Pass area and the lower elevations of the Teton zone are expected to be moderate.
