Kernpunkte

Warming temperatures and sunshine will quickly destabilize snow surfaces on sunny slopes at all elevations. Warming temperatures will also increase the likelihood of triggering a large avalanche that fails on weak layers buried 2-3 feet. Be cautious near areas of wind-affected snow in very steep terrain where these problems overlap, and you are most likely to impact weak layers and trigger an avalanche. When small wet avalanches begin to originate from rocky outcrops and snow surfaces become moist, move to shadier slopes. Lower angle, sheltered, and shady slopes will provide the best and safest riding.

    As temperatures rise throughout the day, expect widespread wet loose activity beginning on east aspects and continuing to south and west aspects as the day progresses. These avalanches could entrain large amounts of snow and be possible up to 10,000 feet, where temperatures are forecasted to get to 32 degrees with sunny skies. Look for pinwheels and rollerballs originating from rocky outcrops and monitor snow surfaces for increasing moisture.  Move to shadier slopes and be mindful of steep slopes above you and the increasing chances of natural wet loose activity.

    Slabs overlying weak layers buried 2-3 feet deep remain possible to trigger on very steep slopes over 35°. Warming temperatures throughout the day will increase the sensitivity of slabs overlying weak layers and increase the likelihood of avalanches during peak hours of warming. Signs of instability such as cracking, collapsing, or recent avalanches may not be present before triggering a large, dangerous avalanche capable of propagating far across or upslope. Multiple tracks on a slope do not indicate that a slope is stable. Stick to lower consequence terrain away from terrain traps and rocky, convex, very steep slopes today.

    Minimize time spent under large cornices. Warming temperatures will increase the likelihood of cornice breaks, creating very large triggers that can impact weak layers.

    This terrain is very steep and cliffy and has produced multiple avalanches in the past 10 days. This is a prime example of a slope harboring persistent weak snow.

    Weak snow buried 5 feet deep exists near the ground above 9,000’. Triggering an avalanche at this depth is very unlikely but not impossible.

    On February 10th, a rider stepped off their sled and triggered a very large avalanche that failed near the ground on Lava Mountain. This avalanche was triggered where the overlying slab was thin making it possible for the rider to impact the underlying weak layer. Manage this problem the same way you would manage weak layers in the middle of the snowpack by avoiding very steep, rocky, and wind loaded terrain.
