Kernpunkte

Avalanches remain unlikely. Continue to look out for small pockets of unstable snow in steep terrain, monitor for afternoon warming, and expect a variety of surfaces as you travel.

Avalanche Discussion

The broken record continues to spin. Conditions will be similar today to those of the last 23 days. To catch you up on what we have been discussing: expect a variety of surfaces as you travel, and bring ski and boot crampons to help manage slick spots. Warm afternoon temperatures will soften solar slopes; look for a wet, mushy surface, and move to shadier terrain if it becomes concerning. Finally, continue to monitor steep terrain for isolated pockets of unstable snow; a small avalanche may be enough to knock you off your feet in consequential terrain.

Across the forecast zone, coverage has become a pertinent variable over the last few weeks. After the storms moved out on January 9th, we were in good shape with broad coverage and low snowlines. During our prolonged high pressure period, settlement and melt have eaten away at our snowpack and the depth has decreased. Mammoth, June, and areas closer to the crest continue to have the deepest snowpack in the zone. South of Mammoth or north of June Lake, coverage decreases significantly. Expect shallowly buried hazards (trees, rocks, creeks) to affect your day, especially outside the Mammoth-to-June area.
