Kernpunkte

Overall, avalanche risk is low and normal caution is advised.  A minor storm will impact the area this afternoon and evening, bringing poor visibility and an inch or two of new snow to the mountains. Don't rule out small slabs in steep terrain above treeline, where a few inches of new snow and wind may combine. As always, do not climb into a whiteout, know where you are going and carry navigation equipment. Despite mild valley conditions, it's still winter-like on Mount Shasta. Be prepared.

    It's unlikely to encounter any avalanche that is big enough to bury you today, but a bit of fresh snow and breezy conditions on the upper mountain may create small slabs of drifted snow along ridges, couloirs, rock outcrops and other extreme terrain features. Triggering one of these small slabs is possible and could cause a loss of balance, resulting in a slip and fall. Use those small test slopes as canaries in the coal mine. If you see fresh snow drifts, blocking and cracking and/or can trigger a small slab on a steep slope, raise a glass of caution to the area you are traveling in.

Avalanche Discussion

While boats and bikes are being dusted off, fresh turns are still a thing in the Mount Shasta backcountry. Check out yesterday's Avalanche Gulch observation here. Near treeline on the big hill, 172 inches of snow remains on the ground. The west side averages 110 inches and 150 inches on the east side. Expect increasing clouds and one more spiff of winter weather this weekend before Spring starts springing. The world-class corn harvest that Shasta is famous for has yet to commence, but soon to be. Skiing and riding conditions leave something to be desired, though moments of brilliance can be found.  Move with nature, not against it. The best days of your life can't happen without you there. Live with presence. Every moment of effort enhances your vibrancy and sets you up for a majestic existence. Give like earth, be flexible like water, protect yourself like fire and be boundless like air!April 14th will be our last daily forecast for the season, but don't worry, the lights won't be off here.
