Kernpunkte

Unstable wind drifts may linger in near and above treeline terrain. Hard wind slabs can break in unexpected ways. Be cautious of stiff, rounded dunes and cracking in surface snow.

After the extreme winds of the past 24 hours, there is limited snow left to blow onto leeward terrain. You may find lingering wind slab instabilities in near and above treeline terrain today, especially in leeward catchment zones. Be mindful of slopes beneath ridgelines, depressions, gullies, bowls, and protected alpine chutes. Look for cracking in stiff, hollow snow to alert you to the problem. Areas that are too exposed will be scoured. Slab development has been limited in protected terrain. Exposed areas in near treeline terrain and protected features above treeline hold the biggest possibility for lingering instability. Remember that hard wind slabs can break above you, or can be triggered from the edges as you ease into a steep feature. Use caution and make localized assessments to mitigate this hazard today.

Avalanche Discussion

Yesterday's extreme winds blew a lot of the recent snowfall away. They also formed small, soft slabs on exposed features in openings below treeline. Wind-affected snow was more common near treeline, where slabs were up to 8 inches thick. The most exposed areas above treeline were scoured to crusts or dirt.

Where wind slabs exist, they rest atop a small amount of soft snow. Under that is a hard crust found up to about 9500'.

Freezing level will rise to 10000' today in the northern part of our zone, and up to 11000' further south. You can expect to see rollerballs and maybe some small wet loose instabilities on solar aspects below and near treeline.  Breakable crusts exist on these surfaces in the early morning and late afternoon hours.
