Kernpunkte

Overnight temperatures near 9,500ft hovered near 37 degrees. Morning snow surfaces will be frozen, but the depth of freeze will be shallow. As soon as the sun hits, the snowpack will lose cohesion quickly. Expect avalanche danger to increase before mid-day. Wet snow avalanches will be possible on all aspects at all elevations. Though it feels like spring conditions, be aware of the persistent weak layer buried up to three feet deep on the northerly half of the compass. Travel in the mountains will be difficult today due to structureless wet snow. Plan to turn around early and carefully assess boot and ski penetration. Wet snow deeper than your boot top is a sign the snowpack is losing its structure.

    At mid elevations the slab over the buried persistent weak layer is becoming wet and losing its strength. As the free water reaches this layer it can cause it to become weaker and easier to trigger. Slab depths are one to three feet thick and assessing stability will require digging down to that layer. Though becoming more stubborn to trigger, these slides may break larger than anticipated. Avoiding steep slopes on northerly aspects will help reduce your uncertainty.

    The danger of wet loose avalanches will increase rapidly during the day. Wet loose avalanche conditions are likely and will be found on steep slopes throughout the mountains today. Carefully assess steep terrain and runouts. Natural avalanches will be possible so pay close attention to overhead hazards.

Sky cover will slightly decrease by morning and lead to partly cloudy skies. Overnight temperatures at 9,000 ft will be in the mid-thirties. Tomorrow will be the warmest day of the weekend with highs in the fifties possible at upper elevations. Winds will veer to the southwest at speeds of 15-20mph.Without a freeze tonight the snowpack tomorrow will be generally weak due to wet, cohesionless snow. The snowpack will be isothermal in shallower locations at low and mid elevations. As the buried persistent weak layer becomes affected with free water, slabs may release easier and unexpectedly. These types of avalanches can run long distances and well into lower elevations and across low angle terrain. Human triggered wet avalanches will be likely tomorrow and natural avalanches will be possible. The avalanche danger will be Considerable on all aspects at all elevations throughout the forecast areas.
