    The  2-4" of snow from early Saturday along with less than 1" of new snow will be transported by moderate WSW winds on Sunday to form small drifts that you can trigger. Expect a gradual increase in the avalanche danger throughout the day. Cracking snow surfaces can help identify the transition into wind-affected terrain. The depth of the new snow over a crust will help identify areas where wind has deposited snow. Anticipate areas of wind-drifted snow deeper than 6" using clues from wind-textured snow and swales around rocks. Steer around lee slopes in steep avalanche start zones, particularly where they might push you into a terrain trap such as rocks or a gulley.

Avalanche Discussion

A storm is brewing for the mountains with a return to very winter-like conditions. Heavy precipitation should arrive for Mt. Hood starting Sunday evening. As it does so, expect avalanche danger to increase significantly. With stormy weather and rising avalanche hazard, don’t get caught out Sunday night unexpectedly. 

On Friday night, light snowfall brought 2.5" of accumulation to Mt. Hood Meadows and 4" of snow to Timberline. Freezing levels rose briefly to 6500 ft, but temperatures weren't as warm as Saturday. Mt. Hood Meadows Patrol reported very isolated shallow wind slabs and shallow wet loose avalanche activity on Saturday.

NWAC forecasters traveling in White River Drainage on Friday found generally stable avalanche conditions. Snow conditions below 5500-6000 ft had deteriorated and become dirty with discontinuous snow coverage in a summer-like state and open stream crossings. Many ridgelines and sun-exposed slopes are melted out. Snow conditions improve quickly above 6000 ft. In the transition zone, snow surfaces appear scabby with old wind drifts in a dry to wet transition and very visible on top of the dirty older snow. Above treeline, Wednesday's 1-3" of snow became more continuous. No new avalanches have been reported since 3/24.
