Kernpunkte

Wind and temperature have risen this morning, not the holy grail of weather we like. Fresh snow that accumulates with denser, more cohesive snow on top of looser, lower density snow is top-heavy. This is the result of snowfall and temperature that becomes warmer as the storm evolves, and this is the case today. Mother Nature messed up her cake, and it's upside down.Precipitation will linger. Strong, gusty winds out of the south are expected through at least Friday. Large avalanches are possible above treeline where wind blown snow has amassed.

    Above treeline observations have been difficult, but historic weather can mean historic avalanches. No doubt, wind and heavy snow have been piling up. The predominant wind direction over the past week has been out of the south/southeast, averaging 12 mi/hr with max gusts to 61 mi/hr and likely higher on the upper mountain. Large and destructive avalanches are possible. Warming temperatures could tip the scale for unstable wind slabs. Let avalanche terrain cool off for the time being. Stick to low angle slopes and stay out from underneath avalanche paths.

    Storm slabs have been unreactive below treeline in the last 24 hours. Near and above treeline, storm slab properties have been better with wind stiffening. Slab instability will settle quickly today with the warming temperature. Look for signs of unstable storm slabs during the AM hours. Direct feedback such as shooting cracks on small, steep test slopes is a good canary in the coal mine.  This afternoon, the storm slab problem will diminish.

Avalanche Discussion

Warming temps...ugh! Snow levels will rise to ~6,800 feet today. Avalanches may have already occurred early this morning with today's warm-up. The snowpack will settle out quickly near and below treeline. Above the treeline may be a different story. If you can get up there, stay off of and out from underneath avalanche terrain. Snowmobile riding has been expert only due to very deep snow conditions. If you're heading out, don't get casual day syndrome. It's the real deal out there. Be prepared.
