Recent snowfall and steady southwest winds will continue to thicken stubborn slabs at upper elevations. Warm, sunny weather the last couple of days helped form a new melt-freeze crust on windward-facing slopes and this may stave off efficient wind loading till snowfall arrives Sunday afternoon. However, if sustained stronger winds arrive sooner than forecast, this may help erode the said crust and enhance snow transport.
Surface slabs mostly sit atop a hard, melt-freeze crust. These slabs have been slightly more reactive in tests and with ski pressure where a thin layer of softer snow sits between denser snow above and the firm crust below. Snowfall on March 4 yielded slightly higher snow totals in the Selkirk Mountains - 8 to 12 inches whereas other areas were around 3 to 6 inches. In portions of the Selkirks, drifted slabs may be slightly more sensitive to a person or machine, and an ensuing avalanche has the potential to be a bit larger.
