Kernpunkte

Warming temperatures and strong sunshine will create wet snow instabilities today as daytime warming occurs.  Reactive slabs of wind blown snow that formed yesterday from the recent strong winds could still be a concern in some open areas.  Make a plan to identify where unstable snow may exist and move around these areas of concern.

    Well above freezing temperatures, light winds, and strong sunshine will make wet loose avalanches a concern for today.  These avalanches will become possible as daytime warming occurs on E-SW-S-SW-W aspects at all elevations.  Most of these wet snow instabilities are expected to be on the smaller size, but larger avalanches could occur and involve more of the recent storm snow. 

    Roller balls and pinwheels will be indicators that the surface snow is losing strength and that larger wet loose avalanches will become possible.  As warming occurs today and the snow surface becomes wet, it's time to move away from avalanche terrain or change aspects away from the sun.

    Gale force NE winds Friday night through Saturday afternoon reached speeds of 40 to 60mph with ridge gusts of 70 to 110mph.  Several wind slab avalanches were reported yesterday, some with hard slab characteristics.  Visible blowing snow and wind transport was observed throughout the forecast region.  These wind slabs have had some time to start to gain strength as active wind loading started to decrease Saturday afternoon.  Hard wind slabs that sound hollow may have a longer window to fully bond and gain strength in some areas today where wind slabs have formed.
