Wet snow instabilities will increase in likelihood today as daytime warming occurs. Rollerballs, wet unconsolidated surface snow, and recent avalanche activity will indicate problematic slopes. Plan to travel on slopes with colder snow surfaces and dial back your exposure to steep terrain before the upper snowpack becomes wet and unconsolidated.

    Partly cloudy skies and moderate winds may help limit the solar impact today, particularly above treeline. However, without a strong refreeze last night, you can expect surface snow to soften quickly. Sheltered areas near rock outcroppings, cliff bands, and tight rocky couloirs where the effects of warming are amplified will present elevated hazards. Wet, sticky snow surfaces, rollerballs and pinwheels, and increasing boot penetration are all signs of surface warming and may foreshadow larger point-release avalanches. Be wary of overhead hazards today, and be ready to retreat if the surface snow thaws, causing you to sink into wet and unconsolidated snow.

Strong winds and partly cloudy skies put the brakes on our warming trend yesterday. However, more quiet weather and warmer temperatures are expected to return for the remainder of the workweek. Overnight temperatures dropped below freezing, and breezy conditions helped lead to a moderate refreeze.  Recent observations have reported that cold and dry snow can still be found on shaded north aspects in the high alpine. This means that some slopes within the forecast area are still transitioning and have yet to get their first dose of significant warming. Watch for changing conditions as you move through the mountains, and keep in mind that rollerballs or pinwheels and increasing boot penetration are signs of instability that often foreshadow larger point-release avalanches. Get an early start and be ready for thin snow cover and variable surface conditions. Retreat from steep slopes before they become wet and unsupportable.
