Avalanche Activity

The old snow is in higher altitudes partially still prone to triggering

Moderate avalanche danger above 2.000 m below that low danger. The main problem still a weak old snow cover underneath fresh snowdrift deposits. Danger spots are predominately in entries and peripheral areas of extremly steep gullies and bowls in the north western to northeastern expositions. There small to medium sized slab avalanches are possible. Spontaneous gliding snow avalanches com from steep slopes wit smooth surfaces are also possible. Avoid areas below gliding cracks.

Snowpack Structure

During the night the surface of the snow can solidify, on sunny slopes surface hoar is forming in some places which softens during the course of the day. In shady areas the settled snow is mostly loose and soft. In highe northwestern to eastern sectors older, predominantly sufficient settled snowdrift areas are existing which are on top of an old snow cover which is weakened due to kinetic metamorphosis (faceting). This combination can be prone to triggering. In steep sunny slopes on smooth surfaces or grass the wet snowcover can start gliding. Exposed area are often icy and hard.

Weather Forecast

On the edge of a high pressure system dry arctic airmasses are drifting towards Styria. Clouds are clearing up during the night and on Sunday good, predominantly mountain weather is forecasted. Some clouds are passing through which are harmless. Below 1.000 m fog can be persistent. Weak northwesterly winds. Temperatures are around -2 degrees in 2.000 m and +2 degrees in 1.500 m.

Tendency

The week starts under influence of a high pressure system, the avalanche danger is decreasing.
