The fresh and somewhat older wind slabs represent the main danger. The sometimes strong wind will transport the new snow significantly. Soft weak layers exist in the snowpack in particular at transitions from a shallow to a deep snowpack, when entering gullies and bowls for example.

Weak layers exist in the old snowpack. In particular transitions from a shallow to a deep snowpack where weaknesses exist in the old snowpack are especially dangerous. Backcountry touring calls for experience in the assessment of avalanche danger.
