Avalanche Activity

CM for 9/2. Fresh unstable windslab mainly on N-E-SE aspects above 800m. Old snowpack firm and stable. Cornices! Moderate hazard.

Forecast Snow Stability: Fresh unstable windslab will develop through the period with greatest accumulations on North through East to South-East aspects above 800 metres. Wind sheltered locations such as gullies, corrie rims and ridge flanks will be particularly affected. Fragile cornices will build above these aspects. The older snowpack will be firm and stable. The avalanche hazard will be Moderate.

Snowpack Structure

Forecast Weather Influences: Heavy snow at the start of the period followed by showers. Gale force West-South-West winds overnight veer Westerly during the day. Freezing level around 500 metres overnight rising to 700 metres during the day. Observed Weather Influences: It was a dry morning with gale force South-South-Westerly winds. The freezing level was around summit level. ObservedSnowStability: The snowpack is well bonded and stable in all locations. The surface is firm after an overnight refreeze. The avalanche hazard is Low.
