The wind slabs are to be found in particular adjacent to ridgelines and in pass areas and generally at high altitudes. The wind slabs can be released by a single winter sport participant in isolated cases in particular on north to northeast to east facing aspects, especially on very steep slopes especially above approximately 2800 m at transitions from a shallow to a deep snowpack, when entering gullies and bowls for example. In some places avalanches can also be released in near-ground layers.

As a consequence of rising temperatures and partly cloudy skies the snowpack settled during the last few days. These spring-like weather conditions gave rise to rapid moistening of the snowpack below approximately 2700 m. As a consequence of falling temperatures the snowpack consolidated during the last few days. Isolated avalanche prone weak layers exist in the bottom section of the snowpack at intermediate and high altitudes. In all aspects less snow than usual is lying. In high Alpine regions snow depths vary greatly, depending on the infuence of the wind.
