Friday may finally be the day warm air wins over cold wind to create some avalanches throughout the zone. If you find yourself in the sunshine and see new rollerballs or find the snow surfaces becoming wet, head for shaded terrain and be aware of terrain above you. If you’re traveling at middle or upper elevations, be aware of wind-drifted piles of snow where you could trigger an avalanche more easily.

    Snoqualmie Pass proper has continued to escape much of the hot weather that has affected the Western part of the zone and other areas of the Cascades due to a cool east breeze. Look for these east winds to disseminate on Friday, leaving the entire zone more prone to warming. Warm temperatures could combine with sunshine to allow for a few loose wet avalanches or cornice drops on any aspect, but will be focused on solar slopes. If you see new rollerballs or find the snow surfaces becoming wet and sticky, seek out more shaded slopes.

    The wind was definitely a player at Snoqualmie Pass the past few days and therefore we can’t rule out the possibility of you encountering a lingering Wind Slab at middle and upper elevations on Friday. With East wind events like we just experienced, loading patterns may be different than you are used to, so pay attention as you travel to see where the snow ended up. You can look for smooth pillow-like piles of snow or textured surfaces to help you clue into wind deposited areas. At higher elevations, you could even find some larger slabs that could break in surprising ways. Keep an eye out for firm, hollow-sounding snow as an indication to head for lower angled slopes.

Avalanche Discussion

The snowpack around Snoqualmie Pass is generally strong. Any avalanche activity should occur within the recent snow or at the newest interface (11/30). Prior to this week’s storm, surface hoar was reported by avalanche professionals in and around the Snoqualmie Pass. We are another day removed from the storm and so far, no avalanches have been reported on this layer, but we’ll keep it in the back of our minds until we have more information. If you dig on a shaded and sheltered slope, particularly in the eastern part of the zone, let us know what you see by submitting a public observation. 

At lower elevations, early season conditions still exist with numerous small trees, logs, and open creeks that could ruin your day. Allow extra time to navigate these obstacles.

During the ongoing Covid-19 pandemic, continue to follow the latest guidance from local, state, and federal health officials. Avoid unnecessary risks that could impact first responders and stress medical resources.  Wear a mask when appropriate, practice social distancing, and consider recreating closer to home.
