The winds shifted to the N and NE during the night and should be strong enough to move snow at times. These winds typically scour snow away from the N-NE-E aspects and blow it over to the SE-S-SW-W-NW aspects. Most of today's wind slabs will exist on open slopes near ridgelines on those newly wind-loaded aspects. A few old wind slabs may still linger on the N-NE-E aspects in areas with less wind scouring. Many of the wind slabs should remain small and not extend too far from the ridgelines. However, some could involve enough snow to bury or injure a person especially if an avalanche occurs in an area with terrain traps like gullies or cliffs. Triggering a wind slab avalanche will remain possible today. Large cornices still loom above many slopes.
Blowing snow, cornices, and wind-affected snow surfaces can all help identify where wind slabs may exist. Traveling in terrain sheltered from the winds can provide a way to bypass the wind slabs and wind-affected snow. The sheltered terrain also offers a better chance for finding softer, more consistent snow.
