Avalanche Activity

Fresh wind slabs require caution. Gradual increase in danger of gliding avalanches and moist snow slides as the snowfall level rises.

As a consequence of new snow and a sometimes strong southerly wind, further wind slabs formed in particular in gullies and bowls and behind abrupt changes in the terrain. The fresh and somewhat older wind slabs can be released easily. or in isolated cases naturally, in all aspects above the tree line. They will be covered with new snow and therefore difficult to recognise. Sometimes avalanches are medium-sized. They can in isolated cases be triggered in the old snowpack and reach dangerously large size. At the border to Ribagorça and Pallars the avalanche prone locations are more prevalent and larger. In particular low altitudes: As the day progresses as the moisture increases there will be a gradual increase in the danger of gliding avalanches and moist snow slides. The current avalanche situation calls for restraint.

Snowpack Structure

In particular in the south 10 to 15 cm of snow, and even more in some localities, has fallen since Monday. The southerly wind has transported the new snow significantly. The various wind slabs of the last few days remain prone to triggering in all aspects above the tree line. Over a wide area 5 to 10 cm of snow, and even more in some localities, will fall above approximately 2000 m. The sometimes strong wind will transport the new snow. The rain will give rise as the day progresses to increasing moistening of the snowpack in particular at low altitude. Large-grained weak layers exist in the bottom section of the old snowpack in particular on west, north and east facing slopes. At intermediate altitudes there are 130 to 170 cm of snow, and even more in some localities.

Tendency

Friday: Temporary decrease in danger of gliding avalanches and moist snow slides as the temperature drops. The danger of dry avalanches will not decrease for the time being.
