The wind, which has been blowing quite strongly in recent days, has reshaped the snowpack, especially at higher elevations, leading to the formation of cornices and new drifts of wind-blown snow that will bond only slowly with the old snow. They must be evaluated with care and prudence. The avalanche prone locations are to be found in particular at the base of rock walls, and adjacent to ridgelines and in gullies and bowls. Avalanches can in many places be released, mostly by large loads. Backcountry touring calls for experience in the assessment of avalanche danger and careful route selection. Apart from the danger of being buried, restraint should be exercised as well in view of the danger of avalanches sweeping people along and giving rise to falls.
As a consequence of the wind the wind slabs have increased in size. Weak layers exist in the snowpack in particular on shady slopes. At mid- and low-mountain elevations, the alternating cycles of melting and refreezing have led to the formation of a hard, load-bearing surface crust in many places, which may become saturated with moisture during the day, especially on sunny slopes.
