Avalanche Activity

Heed: small fresh snowdrift masses at high altitudes

Avalanche danger is low until Monday. In the summit zones of the Dachstein region and Niedere Tauern, fresh shallow snowdrift masses have been generated. Danger zones for slab avalanches lie on north-facing ridgeline slopes and behind abrupt drops in the terrain. With rising daytime temperatures and rain impact, naturally triggered wet loose-snow avalanches continue to be possible on extremely steep slopes, but no large-sized releases.

Snowpack Structure

Moderate winds are generating small snowdrift masses, not well bonded with the old snowpack surface esp. on shady slopes, thus, prone to triggering. At intermediate altitudes the snowpack is losing its firmness due to warmth. Most of the snow lies in the Schladminger and Wölzer Tauern, and Dachstein region.

Weather Synopsis

Saturday: in the Northern Alps, dense clouds will persist, occasional rainfall, light snowfall above 2200 m. On the southern flank of the Alps, pleasant, sunny, convective cloud build-up later in the day, regional rain showers. Winds often brisk from N/NW. At 2000 m: +3 degrees. Sunday: in the Northern Alps, peaks often hidden in clouds, intermittent rainfall, later the clouds will disperse, some sunshine is possible. On the southern flank of the Alps, more sunshine, though convective cloud build-up is expected in the Graz mountains and western Styria, sometimes bringing thunderstorms. Winds will be light to moderate from the east. At 2000 m: +3 degrees in the afternoon. On Monday, a mixture of sunshine and clouds, but it will remain mild at high altitudes.
