Avalanche Activity

The more recent wind slabs represent the main danger. They can be released in isolated cases, especially at their margins.

Fresh wind slabs have formed especially adjacent to ridgelines and in gullies and bowls. The mostly small wind slabs of the last few days can be released by a single winter sport participant. The wind slabs are clearly recognisable. Caution is to be exercised at transitions from a shallow to a deep snowpack. In particular along the border with France these avalanche prone locations are more prevalent and the danger is greater. Here the avalanches are in some cases medium-sized.

Snowpack Structure

In all aspects snow depths vary greatly above approximately 2200 m, depending on the infuence of the wind. Below approximately 1800 m from a snow sport perspective, insufficient snow is lying. On steep sunny slopes below approximately 2500 m a little snow is lying. 10 to 20 cm of snow fell on Saturday above approximately 1800 m, especially along the border with France. The snowpack is not distinctly layered. Shady slopes: The snowpack consists of faceted crystals. These weather conditions will give rise to favourable bonding of the old snowpack.

Tendency

As a consequence of low temperatures a favourable avalanche situation will develop during the next few days. The avalanche danger will decrease gradually.
