Avalanche Activity

The fresh snow and the wind slabs represent the main danger.

The new snow and wind slabs are lying on the unfavourable surface of an old snowpack in particular on very steep shady slopes above approximately 2300 m. The fresh wind slabs have formed in particular adjacent to ridgelines and in gullies and bowls and generally at high altitudes, caution is to be exercised at transitions from a shallow to a deep snowpack. In particular along the border with France the avalanche prone locations are a little more prevalent. Apart from the danger of being buried, restraint should be exercised in view of the danger of avalanches sweeping people along and giving rise to falls.

Snowpack Structure

10 to 20 cm of snow has fallen since Sunday above approximately 1500 m. In some cases the wind slabs have bonded poorly with the old snowpack. In some places new snow is lying on a hard crust. In high Alpine regions snow depths vary greatly, depending on the infuence of the wind. Below approximately 2000 m from a snow sport perspective, in most cases insufficient snow is lying.
