Kernpunkte

Human triggered avalanches are still possible today in steep terrain where the wind has deposited old snow.  Leeward sides of ridgelines and down slope of wind lips have wind slab potential.  Travel cautiously on these leeward windloaded slopes, especially above terrain traps.

    North and Easterly winds have blown the past coulple days up high in the terrain.  Horse tails blowing south and west were spotted over much of the Sierra ridgeline yesterday.  Though most exposed southwest aspects are stripped of snow from previous storms. There are sheltered zones on all aspects where recent wind loading has occured and slab formation and avalanches are possible.   Uniform patterns on the surface, density changes underfoot and hollow feeling with step pressure is a good indicator of possible wind slab. 

Avalanche Discussion

  • Multiple snow pit tests in a multitude of location got propagating sudden collapse in results in a mid pack weaker layers adjacent to buried rain crust,  but in very isolated locations. Mainly Near Tree Line on north shaded cold aspects.  
  • No new surface avalanche evidence has been found in the past several days since the last storm.
  • There are multiple rain crusts mid pack that we are tracking that have possibility of becoming a weak layer of concern.  Especially in these past couple days of very cold temperatures.  The next couple days of warming temperatures will have some effect on these layers, hopefully bonding said layers.   • Cold light snow still remains in shaded locations. Get it before its gone!
