Kernpunkte

Although snow surfaces have become firm in almost all terrain and the likelihood of triggering an avalanche has decreased, the possibility for skiers and riders to trigger small surface slabs as well as large and destructive avalanches exists today. If venturing into steep terrain, do so cautiously. Supportive surface conditions can be misleading, therefore careful snowpack evaluation is necessary to make safe terrain choices.

    Weak snow layers buried in November lie above 8000 feet. Activity involving this layer was widespread during the recent storm cycle and included large natural avalanches through Wednesday.  The storm cycle ended with rain to approximately 9000 feet and rime above that elevation.  Hard snow surfaces have made the triggering of avalanches on that layer unlikely but such an event cannot be ruled out. If triggered these slabs will be hard with depths anywhere from 2 to 6 feet. Areas of concern include very steep cliff areas and terrain near ridge crests where previous wind loading has occurred.

    Large recent avalanche that occurred at the end of the storm.  Slab formed by wind loading looks to have failed on the persitent weak layer buried in early November.

    Strong winds have moved transported loose snow in steep leeward  terrain at the high elevations. These slabs lie upon slick sliding surfaces and could be triggered as soft slabs with depths to one foot. Be mindful that even small avalanches can carry severe consequences in unforgiving terrain. 

Avalanche Discussion

The recent storm cycle caused widespread avalanches at the high elevations and on north facing terrain at the upper portion of the mid elevations. Yesterday was the first day that visibility allowed views of the mountains and widespread avalanche activity was observed. Significant events include No Name Face and The Great White Hump. In addition to what can still be identified, many more avalanches are likely to have occurred early in the storm although the very strong winds and snowfall have hidden those events. Known avalanches with four to five foot crowns are completely hidden by additional snowfall. The cycle ended with significant rain below 8500 to 9000 feet and very dense snow and rime crusts above the rain/snow line. The storm was followed by cooler temperatures, resulting in very hard and slick snow surfaces in the majority of backcountry terrain. As mentioned above this has greatly reduced the likelihood of triggering an avalanche, however the poor structure of buried weak layers remains. Collapse was reported yesterday indicating the potential still exists for a person to impact the old weak layers. 

The very strong winds and warm temperatures during the storm caused a major rime event at the high elevations and also greatly impacted B-TAC’s remote weather stations. Several stations are currently offline and/or rimed so that instruments are giving bogus data.
