It will be possible to trigger avalanches 1-3 feet deep in steep terrain today. Recently wind loaded slopes are the most likely areas to find unstable snow. Triggering and being caught in an avalanche carries high consequences. Obstacles such as rocks and vegetation lurk just below the surface and will increase the potential for injury.

    New snow in the last 24 hours has built isolated pockets of slab less than a foot in depth that now rest on older persistent slabs. Triggering these smaller slabs has the potential to activate weak layers deeper in the snowpack in upper elevation terrain on the north half of the compass.

    Slabs that formed over a week ago sit on top of weak snow. Triggering these slabs is becoming less likely over time, but the possibility still remains. Slab depths are in the 1-3 foot range, with previously wind loaded slopes holding the thicker slabs. Obvious signs of instability such as avalanches, shooting cracks and collapsing may not present themselves prior to triggering. Because of this it is important to practice safe travel. Ride one at a time across steep terrain, use islands of safety when stopping and communicate your plans with your partners.

Avalanche Discussion

It is still early season in the Salt River and Wyoming Ranges. Shallow overall snow depths remain and have allowed for the formation of weak snow, especially in the lower half of the snowpack. Snow that fell between Dec 15-17 formed slabs that sit on this weak snow and remain a problem. Over time it is becoming more difficult to trigger these slabs, as that interface is slowly gaining strength. Despite this gradual improvement, the possibility of triggering remains. Consequences also remain high, as going for a ride could result in burial or significant injury. Hard obstacles in the form of the ground, rocks, and vegetation are just below the surface in many locations. Getting dragged through this type of terrain can result in bodily harm.
