Avalanche conditions will remain generally safe. Above treeline, 10–15 inches of new snow is expected by tomorrow morning. The new snow combined with moderate-strong southerly winds will develop fresh wind slabs on northerly aspects above treeline.

    Gray Butte weather station (~8,000 feet) is currently recording moderate to strong southerly winds. Depending on how much snow falls today, wind slabs are going to develop fast. The greater the snow accumulation, the larger these slabs will become. Remember, wind can deposit snow five times as fast as it can fall from the sky. Anticipate encountering these slabs on aspects ranging from northwest to northeast, as well as on smaller leeward-facing terrain features. The formation of these slabs will be restricted to above treeline terrain, where higher snow totals are expected. These slabs may reach depths of up to a foot deep and could be reactive to skis.

Avalanche Discussion

Today marks the eagerly anticipated weather change we've all been waiting for! A low pressure system has established itself off the California coast, channeling moisture from the south into the Mount Shasta region. Precipitation is set to intensify throughout the day, driven by the upslope orographics of southerly flow. Rain has already begun in town, and snow is falling above treeline. 

There is some uncertainty regarding the total snow accumulation and distribution from this storm. Freezing levels are expected to stay high for the next 24 hours. Bunny Flat (~6,900 feet) may not receive much, if any, snow accumulation. If temperatures stay warm, the snow accumulation will likely concentrate above treeline, potentially reaching 10–15 inches. However, there's a chance the storm cools over Mount Shasta, causing the snow level to drop unexpectedly. In such a scenario, there could be moderate accumulation at elevations lower than expected. If venturing into the backcountry today, be prepared for challenging weather and travel conditions. Despite the new snow, the snowpack remains shallow, with rocks, trees, and other natural features just below the surface. An impact with these objects could break you and/or your equipment.
