By Tuesday morning the wet avalanche activity that was observed on Monday should be a thing of the past.  Colder temperatures and a few inches of new snow means we will have to shift our brains back to our "winter" avalanche characters.  Shallow Wind Slab avalanches will be possible on East slopes near treeline and in the alpine.  These avalanches will likely be small in the morning but grow during the day in proportion to any new snow that we receive.

    It's hard to believe that we had an avalanche forecast that didn't include Wind Slabs, but not to worry it is back on our problem list!  Wind Slabs on Tuesday will be directly proportional to the amount of new snow that we receive.  The national blend of models is calling for a couple of inches of snow overnight and then a few more during the day tomorrow.  If that forecast holds true, any instabilities early in the morning would be shallow.  With wind deposited snow accumulating 3-5 times as much as in sheltered meadows, Wind Slab avalanches could be large enough to bury or injure a rider by the end of the day.

    Moderate to Strong West and Southwest winds mean that East and NorthEast slopes below ridgelines or behind crossloaded features will be the most dangerous spots.

Avalanche Discussion

What a swing we've had with the weather!  Today Wet Loose avalanches up to size 2 were observed.  The weather station on Century Drive at 6,424 ft. reached 52 degrees F by early afternoon.

On Tuesday the weather will be more wintery after the passage of a cold front.  While most of the avalanche characters associated with melting will be a thing of the past, I will still be giving cornices a wide berth.  New snow overnight will build shallow Wind Slabs, which will grow throughout the day with whatever snow we continue to receive and Moderate-Strong West winds.
