Kernpunkte

Strong northerly winds have been blowing for a day and a half making wind slabs the primary concern today in this zone. Natural avalanches could occur and there are good chances a person could trigger an avalanche in windblown snow up to 2' deep above 1,000'. Also above 2,500' there is still a small chance a person could find a thin spot and trigger a very large avalanche up to 6' deep. Better snow and safer conditions can be found today in the treeline elevation band in wind protected areas.

    Recent Avalanches: We got to Lost Lake yesterday and saw only one avalanche that may have been recent. This looked like a small wind slab. It was hard to tell because the wind was blowing strong and the crown was getting filled in.

    Strong winds blew through the day yesterday and overnight in the Seward/Lost Lake area. It was blowing so strong much of it probably sublimated or landed lower than normal on the slope. Even slopes in the upper part of the treeline elevation band will be suspect today, which includes small features. These are especially dangerous if there is a gully below where snow could pile up. Normally, with lower wind speeds, wind slabs are found below ridgelines and in cross-loaded gullies and they may exist in these places. Wind affected snow feels firm and may be smooth or have texture like in this photo. Shooting cracks are the red flag that lets us know the snow needs more time to stabilize.

    Dry Loose Avalanches: In wind sheltered places there is plenty of cold snow that could be entrained on steep slopes in a dry loose avalanche or sluff. This type of avalanche isn't usually dangerous unless it takes you off your feet and into a tree or off of a cliff.

    We got to Lost Lake yesterday and confirmed there is a thick rain crust from the Feb. 3-5 rainstorm at least in the treeline elevation band and below. This crust is underneath some new and windblown snow from the last few small storms. The December facets were 3.5' deep in both snowpits at Snug Harbor and Lost Lake. This is good news regarding the deep slab problem. We still have some uncertainty above 2,500' because we don't know where the crust thins and we don't know what the facets look like at upper elevations. This snowpack is more similar to Turnagain Pass than Summit Lake and we have information from Turnagain that tells us this layer is stubborn in the upper elevations. We can't write it off yet though because even though it's stubborn, historical knowledge of this type of problem tells us there's still a chance a person could find a thin spot and trigger a very large avalanche.
