Today, you can trigger shallow soft slabs where winds are drifting the new snow - a small problem that is easy to recognize and avoid.  In stark contrast, you can also trigger a much larger hard slab avalanche that breaks near the ground - a problem that is harder to identify.   Although the latter has become a low likelihood concern, it carries deadly consequences.  You are more likely to trigger one of these dangerous avalanches from a shallow spot on the slope where slabs become thinner or where there is fresh wind-loading occurring today.   Give yourself a larger margin for error than normal when assessing the snowpack and choosing terrain. You can always default to slope angles less than 30 degrees for the safest riding.

    The potential to trigger thick slabs breaking on weak layers near the ground should dictate your terrain choices and travel habits.  Avalanches have the potential to break 2 to 6+ feet thick - across entire start zones - evidenced by the hundreds of large avalanches that ran naturally this month.  Avalanches that release from high elevation, leeward aspects will be deep and unsurvivable.   Even in wind-sheltered or windward terrain, you can trigger sizeable slabs that break on weak snow near the ground. The most reliable way to manage this problem is by traveling on slope angles less than 30 degrees that don't connect to steeper terrain above.   If you choose to ride in avalanche terrain, seek out planar or concave slopes with deep, uniform snow coverage, free of shallow spots, rock bands, and active windloading.  Regroup in safe zones that are clear of unusually wide and long-running avalanches.  

    Most of the avalanches this month have released on weak layers near the ground. The slabs are thick and can propagate surprisingly wide distances across terrain features that might normally feel safe.

    This morning's fresh snow will be easily drifted by westerly winds throughout the day.  Watch for shallow wind slabs to develop on leeward and crossloaded terrain features in areas exposed to wind drifting.  Blowing snow and thicker drifts in the new snow will make it easy to identify where the problem develops.  Today's wind slabs should be relatively small unless we see higher snowfall amounts than expected.  Fresh drifts could be dangerous if they carry you into rocks or trees, stuff you into a gulley, or act as a trigger for a  larger persistent slab.  You can easily avoid the problem by traveling in wind-sheltered terrain. 

    Blowing snow will clue you into fresh wind slab formation today.

Avalanche Discussion

The storm is tracking on the low end of forecasted snow amounts,  so we held off on increasing the danger today.  We are expecting 1" to 5" of new snow across our forecast area, favoring the Northwest Mountains.   If the storm stays on track, the danger will remain MODERATE.  Shallow wind slabs will develop through the day and the persistent slab problem will remain stubborn to human and natural triggers.  If you find storm totals exceeding 8" to 10" in your travels, bump the danger up a level to account for increased size and likelihood of wind slabs and an increasing threat of natural persistent slab activity.   I'm going to leave yesterday's discussion up for the weekend crowd to read, regarding travel advice for our persistent slab concerns.   

Although our persistent slab problem has become more difficult to trigger, it demands serious caution because of the high consequences.  We are only a few days out since our last reported persistent slab activity (explosive triggered on Wednesday, naturals on Tuesday).   Some slopes are finding equilibrium now under the past few days of quiet weather.  Some slopes will require a large trigger such as a cornice fall or tunneling your snowmobile's track deep into the slab.  And some slopes can be triggered by the weight of a person crossing the wrong spot on the slope.  This video describes how you can trigger a large avalanche by collapsing the weak layer from where slabs thin out.   Signs of instability and persistent slab activity have been more common this past week in the Southeast Mountains, where the snowpack is generally shallower and weak layers are a bit worse.   However, we are still finding poor structures and concerning pit results in both the Northwest Mountains (example) and Southeast Mountains (example).  Under low likelihood, high consequence scenarios, we often get drawn into more aggressive-than-planned terrain because the snowpack feels stable and the danger is not staring us in the eye.  Here are a few strategies for reducing your risk if you and your group have avalanche terrain in mind.

  • Verbalize "off-limits" terrain with your partners before you leave the trailhead and stick to it, regardless of what the snowpack is telling you.  Snowpit results and snowpack structures are variable right now due to previous avalanche activity, winds, etc - don't trust your life to one result. 
  • Stay in terrain where the snowpack is deep and uniform. Avoid areas where the wind has varied the thickness of slabs. Avoid shallow rocky areas.
  • Set your up-tracks out of harm's way.  This season, about 40% of the ski touring avalanche fatalities have occurred while ascending.  You are more vulnerable going uphill and it is harder to travel one at a time.
  • Re-evaluate your safe zones so that they are appropriate for our unusually wide propagating avalanche conditions.  There have been four multi-party fatality accidents in the US this year, and a couple of accidents where 8 people were caught all at once.  Your normal regrouping spots may not be safe. 

Remember that when the snowpack is the question, terrain is the answer. You can always have a low-stress, safe day by staying on slope angles less than 30 degrees that don't connect to steeper terrain above, while waiting for a more trustworthy spring snowpack.
