Kernpunkte

The snowpack remains prone to triggering. The avalanche prone locations are to be found especially on steep shady slopes above the tree line. Weak layers in the old snowpack necessitate caution and restraint.

Avalanche Activity

The snowpack remains prone to triggering. The avalanche prone locations are to be found especially on steep shady slopes above the tree line. Weak layers in the old snowpack necessitate caution and restraint.

Avalanches can as before be released easily. Wind slabs and weakly bonded old snow require caution, especially on steep west, north and east facing slopes above the tree line as well as in areas close to the tree line. Avalanches can penetrate down to the ground and reach large size in some cases. The avalanche prone locations are numerous difficult to recognise. Whumpfing sounds and the formation of shooting cracks when stepping on the snowpack serve as an alarm indicating the danger. Remotely triggered avalanches are possible.

Snowpack Structure

The new snow and wind slabs of the last few days are lying on surface hoar in particular on wind-protected shady slopes. Towards its base, the snowpack is faceted and weak. Avalanches can be released in deeper layers very easily. In addition the large surface-area wind slabs adjacent to ridgelines and in gullies and bowls are capable of being triggered now as before. The snowpack will be moist at low altitude. On steep sunny slopes the snowpack will only just freeze.
