Wet loose avalanches are a concern as temperatures remain elevated on Thursday. Winds may keep exposed surfaces cooler, presenting more stable conditions on upper elevation windward slopes. Make assessments as you travel by observing moistening or whether you’re sinking several inches into wet snow, and when this is the case move to more frozen snow or lower angle terrain.

    Several sun affected slopes saw small wet loose avalanches and rollerballs on Wednesday. Snow surfaces may freeze overnight, but temperatures are not expected to cool a lot. The sun could wet lower elevation and south facing snow quicker and to a greater depth. If this is the case, in areas where there were already small slides or rollerballs, larger avalanches might occur on those same slopes. Meanwhile, wind will probably keep snow surfaces cooler in the alpine on windward aspects.  

    A number of factors are affecting the avalanche problem on Thursday. Constantly assess the snow as you travel, and onitor the snow surface for warming,  paying attention to any rollerballs running downhill. If the snow was previously crusty but now you’re easily sinking into wet snow 6 or more inches, it’s time to leave that slope. Start moving towards lower angle terrain where there is no overhead hazard, or cooler slopes.

    An abundance of rollerballs peppered this steep sunny slope in the Glacier Creek area Wednesday morning, although the snow didn't get wet enough to avalanche at the time. It still could slide when the snow gets wetter.

The spring cycle is out in full force, so pay attention to snow conditions at lower elevations and on southerly aspects as you travel. The snow may start out hard and crusty but could change substantially as temperatures increase. Keep these large diurnal swings in mind as you plan your trips.  

Warmer temperatures are elevating the chances of cornices breaking, so travel cautiously in areas where they are present. Glide cracks may form in areas with shallower snow and smooth ground surfaces, especially at mid to lower elevations. Be wary on slopes beneath glide cracks, as there is a very small possibility that a glide avalanche may occur.  

During the ongoing Covid-19 pandemic, continue to follow the latest guidance from local, state, and federal health officials. Avoid unnecessary risks that could impact first responders and stress medical resources.  Wear a mask when appropriate, practice social distancing, and consider recreating closer to home.
