Avalanche Activity

Fresh and older wind slabs at high altitude. In the afternoon as a consequence of warming during the day and solar radiation there will be a gradual increase in the danger of moist and wet avalanches.

As a consequence of new snow and a sometimes strong wind, avalanche prone wind slabs formed adjacent to ridgelines and in gullies and bowls. The wind slabs can be released easily or naturally in particular on northwest to east to south facing aspects and above the tree line. Wind slabs can in isolated cases be released by small loads. Additionally avalanches can also be triggered in the old snowpack and reach quite a large size in the regions with a lot of snow. As a consequence of warming, the likelihood of dry and wet avalanches being released will increase gradually in all aspects.

Snowpack Structure

The northwesterly wind has transported some snow. In particular adjacent to ridgelines and in gullies and bowls sometimes avalanche prone wind slabs formed. Sunshine and high temperatures will give rise as the day progresses to moistening of the snowpack at low and intermediate altitudes. Large-grained weak layers exist in the bottom section of the snowpack in particular on shady slopes.
