Avalanche Activity

Glide-snow avalanches can trigger naturally at intermediate altitudes

Avalanche danger below 2000m is moderate, above that altitude danger is low. Main problem: glide snow. Below 2000 m the snowpack can trigger on steep slopes with smooth ground wherever there is sufficient snow, releasing small-to-medium sized avalanches. Glide cracks indicate imminent danger.

Snowpack Structure

The snowpack at intermediate altitudes has consolidated increasingly at the lower temperatures. The snowpack base is wet in many places. The old snowpack at high altitudes has settled well and older snowdrift accumulations are well bonded with each other. Below 1500m there is not much snow on the ground.

Tendency

Incrementally, danger of glide-snow avalanches will recede due to lower temperatures
