Avalanche Activity

NC for 22.1:Localised instabilities on steep, convex NW to NE to SE aspects above 900m. Potential for cornice collapse. Moderate Haz

Forecast Snow Stability: The snowpack will continue to consolidate, however instabilities will persist in deeper windslab accumulations on NW through NE to SE aspects above 900m. Steep terrain such as convexities, gully tops, and ridge flanks will be especially affected. Cornices overhanging these aspects could collapse and potentially trigger slopes below. Elsewhere a mostly stable snowpack, with a few isolated instabilities remaining on steep banks and gullies at lower levels. The avalanche hazard will be Moderate.

Snowpack Structure

Forecast Weather Influences: It is expected to be dry throughout the forecast period. Gale force Southerly winds will gradually ease to strong during the course of the day. Summit temperatures will remain below freezing overnight, before rising to above the summits during the day. Observed Weather Influences: Light precipitation falling as snow above 1000 metres, this cleared to leave a dry day. Winds were gale force South-South-Easterly. The freezing level rose to 1000 metres by midday. ObservedSnowStability: Drifting snow at higher levels. New unstable windslab has developed around coire rims and gully tops on NW to NE aspects above 950m. The old snowpack is starting to consolidate, but weaknesses persist within deeper accumulations on N through E to SE aspects above 900m. Steep and convex terrain is especially affected. Cornices above these aspects remain unstable. On these aspects below 900m, localised instabilities remain on steep banks and gullies. The avalanche hazard is Considerable.
