Avalanche Activity

GC for 13/2, Snowpack consolidating and starting to refreeze. Isolated shallow windslab N to E aspects above 900m. Low Hazard.

Forecast Snow Stability: The existing snowpack will gradually consolidate, and above 900 metres start to refreeze. Overnight, isolated accumulations of moderately bonded windslab will develop on North to East aspects above 900 metres. These accumulations are expected to be shallow and mainly affect steep wind sheltered areas such as gullies and coire rims. Below 900 metres the snowpack will continue to gradually thaw and diminish. The avalanche hazard will be Low.

Snowpack Structure

Forecast Weather Influences: Showers overnight will turn to snow above 800 metres before clearing to give a mainly dry day. The freezing level will lower to around 900 metres during the day. Strong South-Westerly winds overnight will gradually ease, becoming light and variable by morning. Observed Weather Influences: A very wet day with strong South-Westerly winds. Precipitation gradually turned to rain at all levels as the freezing level rose to just above the summits. ObservedSnowStability: Wet snow instabilities are present in steep, wind sheltered locations on North-West through East to South-East aspects above 800 metres. Cornices are fragile and prone to collapse. Elsewhere the snowpack is gradually thawing and diminishing. The avalanche hazard is Considerable.
