At the upper elevations deep instability may persist in isolated areas. In addition todays strong winds and new snow will begin to create small pockets of new wind slab on leeward aspects. Isolated pockets of wind slab up to a foot in depth could be human triggered in steep wind loaded avalanche starting zones.

    In isolated areas at the upper elevations depth hoar persists near the base of the snowpack. Deep hard slabs with depths to 40 inches could be human triggered on this weak persistent layer. This basal weakness is limited in distribution and is most likely to be found along the east slope of the Wyoming Range where upper elevations snow depths are shallower than in other parts of this forecast area.

Avalanche Discussion

( Discussion is generated from the previous day's afternoon forecast. )A high pressure ridge over Eastern Idaho will move east during the evening hours. West winds will increase overnight. Areas of light snowfall will develop by morning and increase in intensity during the day. Three to six inches of new snow are possible in favored locations by tomorrow evening. This snowfall will be accompanied by west winds with average speeds of 25 to 30 and gusts to 45 miles per hour. Temperatures will be in the 20s in the mountains and in the upper 20s and 30s in the valleys.In the Teton area the general avalanche is expected to be LOW in the morning and be on the increase at the higher elevations during the day. Isolated areas of MODERATE hazard associated with buried, persistent weak layers exist in the Togwotee Pass and Greys River areas.
