Continued snowfall, increasing winds and warming temperatures will create dangerous avalanche conditions with blowing snow and poor visibility at the mid and upper elevations. On a variety of aspects, newly formed wind slabs will be easily triggered and could release naturally. These slides could also step down to persistent weak layers near the base of the snowpack. TRAVEL IN AVALANCHE TERRAIN IS NOT RECOMMENDED THIS AFTERNOON AT THE HIGHER ELEVATIONS.

    In the past 24 hours, 12 to 16 inches of new snow driven by strong southwesterly winds have formed areas of wind slab at the mid and upper elevations. Continued snowfall, increasing winds and warming temperatures will increase the depth, extent and sensitivity for triggering these slabs. By this afternoon, backcountry travelers are very likely to trigger these slabs to depths of three feet, and they could also release naturally. At the lower elevations, skiers and riders could trigger pockets of soft slab to depths of six to 12 inches by this afternoon.

    Crusts and faceted snow formed in October persist near the base of the snowpack above 9,000 feet on shaded aspects. Surface slabs have the potential to step down to these layers. This low probability event would carry severe consequences.

Avalanche Discussion

Snow showers of varying intensity will continue over the region with an additional three to six inches expected by Tuesday morning. Temperatures will cool to near zero degrees at 10,000 feet by morning with only light snow expected during the day Tuesday. Temperatures will warm only a few degrees during the day and winds will be westerly at 10 to 15 miles per hour on the ridge crests. Additional snow and westerly winds will continue to build soft slabs on lee slopes. At mid and upper elevations backcountry users will find easily triggered slabs to 30 inches in depth on lee slopes. There remains the unlikely chance that triggered slides could pull out deeper snow failing on October weak layers involving the majority of the snowpack. The avalanche hazard is expected to be Considerable.
