Kernpunkte

The wind slabs represent the main danger. They are to be evaluated with care and prudence. Also shady slopes where weaknesses exist in the old snowpack are unfavourable.

Avalanche Activity

The wind slabs represent the main danger. They are to be evaluated with care and prudence. Also shady slopes where weaknesses exist in the old snowpack are unfavourable.

The clearly visible wind slabs can be released by a single winter sport participant in some cases and above the tree line. They represent the main danger. In gullies and bowls and on wind-loaded slopes the likelihood of avalanches is higher. Weak layers exist in the snowpack in particular on steep shady slopes. Weak layers in the old snowpack are difficult to recognise. Low and intermediate altitudes, sunny slopes: The snowpack is largely stable and its surface has a melt-freeze crust. Especially at intermediate altitudes and on steep slopes mostly small natural avalanches are possible as a consequence of warming during the day and solar radiation.

Snowpack Structure

The sometimes avalanche-prone wind slabs are poorly bonded with the old snowpack. Low and intermediate altitudes, sunny slopes: The snowpack is largely stable and its surface has a melt-freeze crust.
