Avalanche Activity

The wind will be moderate to strong over a wide area. The avalanche prone locations are to be found in particular on very steep shady slopes at high altitude and in the vicinity of peaks.

The wind will be moderate to strong over a wide area. The new snow and wind slabs of the last two days are lying on top of a weakly bonded old snowpack above approximately 2000 m. The older wind slabs will be covered with new snow and therefore difficult to recognise, in particular above the tree line and in the central part of the northern flank of the Alps. The avalanche prone locations are to be found in particular on very steep shady slopes at high altitude and in the vicinity of peaks. Sunshine and high temperatures gave rise on Thursday to rapid softening of the snowpack on sunny slopes. In the Prealps as well as at low and intermediate altitudes no snow is lying on south facing slopes.

Snowpack Structure

In all regions in all altitude zones only a small amount of snow is lying for the time of year. In the Prealps as well as at low and intermediate altitudes no snow is lying on south facing slopes. In the other regions above the tree line snow depths vary greatly, depending on the infuence of the wind. Weak layers exist in the old snowpack especially on north, northeast and northwest facing slopes.
