You could trigger wind slabs on recently loaded slopes at mid to upper elevations Monday. Snow and strong winds are forecasted, leading to challenging travel and increasing avalanche danger. Search for snow surface textures that indicate recently drifted snow and avoid these areas on terrain steeper than 35 degrees.

    An observer travelling in the  Mountain Loop Highway area on Saturday noted strong winds with clear evidence of snow transport.  He found reactive wind slabs breaking 6-18 inches deep. You could trigger avalanches deeper on Monday, and destructive enough to bury, injure, or kill you. Look for deposits on leeward slopes, where snow surfaces are pillow-like or textured by the wind. You will find the snow is stiffer in these spots than in non wind-affected areas. Avoid slopes greater than 35 degrees where wind slabs are present.

    Blowing snow and fresh cornices like this can indicate wind slabs may exist on the slope below.

Avalanche Discussion

Expect challenging conditions with variable snow surfaces and limited visibility. Travel in areas you're familiar with or carry appropriate routefinding equipment. This inclement weather will continue at least through Wednesday in the Cascades, and avalanche danger will increase as the storm progresses.

During the ongoing Covid-19 pandemic, continue to follow the latest guidance from local, state, and federal health officials. Avoid unnecessary risks that could impact first responders and stress medical resources.  Wear a mask when appropriate, practice social distancing, and consider recreating closer to home.
