CONSIDERABLE avalanche danger continues due to new and developing wind drifts, primarily in steep, east-facing terrain and cross loaded gullies. Drifted snow may release naturally in the steepest terrain, and is likely to avalanche from a human trigger. You could trigger avalanches 1 to 3 feet thick today that will easily bury a person. Wind drifted slopes should be approached with caution. 

Strong winds, blowing snow, and cold temperatures will make travel above treeline challenging or even dangerous for anyone unequipped for today’s conditions. Having the proper clothing, googles, and the ability to navigate in a whiteout will be essential.  

The Lion Head Summer Trail remains the best option if climbing to the summit from Pinkham Notch. Today and tomorrow may bring enough snow and wind loading to open the Lion Head Winter Route. Be sure to check the slatboards for the trail status.

    Snow overnight and today, combined with a strong W wind, is well suited to form wind slabs throughout the day utilizing the fetch of the Alpine Garden. Snow that fell in the last 10 hours is relatively dry and readily moved by the wind. Yesterday’s 12” (Hermit Lake SNOTEL) of snow is capped by a roughly 2cm ice crust at ravine levels and perhaps protected from the wind, but perhaps not at higher elevations. However, an avalanche from a new wind slab on this icy crust has the potential to step down and entrain yesterday’s snow, significantly increasing the destructive size of the avalanche.

West wind will transport overnight snow and and new snow today into steep, primarily east-facing terrain and cross loaded gullies. Freshly loaded wind slabs will be sensitive to a human trigger and may naturally avalanche with the continuous wind loading through the day. Any avalanche activity today could be on the larger side and will run further than any avalanches this season. Be sure to consider this if you choose to go into Tuckerman Ravine at all. Once you pass the rescue cache on the left, you will be entering an active avalanche path. Left, Chute, the Headwall, and Sluice are prime suspects to avalanche naturally today’ no human trigger is necessary. These avalanches may step down through the melt freeze crust that developed yesterday afternoon and entrain more than just the 3-4” of new snow that fell overnight. If you are thinking that these avalanches will be harmless because Tucks is so small, lacks much vertical fall, and is disconnected, you may be in for a terrible surprise. Today’s danger rating may be the same as yesterday, but remember that the danger rating was expected to rise to Considerable. Today we are starting out there and will have the likely probability of D2 plus sized avalanches in Tucks. Huntington Ravine avalanches and other similar areas will share the strong possibility of smaller avalanches too. Avalanches may be smaller but will be likely.
