Snowpack Structure

The high humditiy gave rise on Wednesday to moistening of the snowpack in all aspects below approximately 2000 m. As a consequence of falling temperatures a crust formed on the surface, in particular below approximately 2100 m. The more recent wind slabs are bonding only slowly with the old snowpack. Towards its base, the snowpack consists of faceted crystals, especially in shady places that are protected from the wind,.

Tendency

The weather will be mostly sunny. Slight increase in danger of dry and moist avalanches as a consequence of warming during the day and solar radiation.

Avalanche Activity

As a consequence of the moderate to strong northwesterly wind, snow drift accumulations formed.

The fresh wind slabs can be released by a single winter sport participant and reach medium size. This applies in particular on steep slopes, and adjacent to ridgelines and in pass areas. They are mostly easy to recognise and to be assessed critically. Avalanches can also be released in the old snowpack and reach medium size in particular on steep shady slopes. This applies in particular in case of a large load.
