Avalanche Activity

The clearly visible wind slabs represent the main danger.

The wind has transported the loosely bonded old snow. As a consequence of a moderate to strong wind from northwesterly directions, mostly small wind slabs formed in particular in gullies and bowls. The avalanche prone locations are to be found especially on very steep slopes above approximately 2300 m. At high altitudes and in high Alpine regions the wind slabs are larger. Fresh wind slabs are easy for the trained eye to recognise but to be assessed with care and prudence. They can be released by a single winter sport participant in some cases. Several mostly small natural avalanches are possible as a consequence of the moderate to strong wind.

Snowpack Structure

In some regions 5 cm of snow has fallen since yesterday above approximately 2000 m. Today the wind was moderate to strong over a wide area. Over a wide area new snow and wind slabs are lying on a hard crust. In its middle, the snowpack is fairly homogeneous. In some cases the wind slabs have bonded poorly with the old snowpack. Snow depths vary greatly at high altitude, depending on the infuence of the wind. Especially on steep sunny slopes as well as below approximately 1900 m only a little snow is lying. Also adjacent to ridgelines hardly any snow is lying.

Tendency

As a consequence of new snow and wind the prevalence of the avalanche prone locations will increase. The avalanche danger will increase during the day.
