Kernpunkte

Southwest flow will continue to bring moderate snow accumulation, and westerly winds to the Mount Shasta area. Dangerous avalanche conditions remain in cold and shaded areas near and above treeline, and on leeward aspects where wind loading has occurred. Human triggered avalanches are likely today. If in doubt, keep it below treeline and limit your exposure to avalanche terrain.

    In the last 24 hours, moderate westerly winds continued to transport the low-density new snow onto leeward aspects. Wind slabs often feel firm and hollow underneath your skis, a significant change in feel from soft new snow. Look out for wind slab development on N-E-S aspects. Keep in mind, wind can deposit snow 3 to 5 times as fast as snow can fall from the sky. Though this problem is specific to leeward terrain features, wind slabs could break more than 2 feet deep and certainly bury you. Wind Slabs are also notorious for failing above a skier versus beneath a skiers skis. Best bet is to steer clear of any leeward avalanche terrain today.

    The last 24 hours of light snow accumulation has given the new snow time to consolidate. Areas that saw more sun likely stabilized the storm slab problem quicker. Nonetheless, many areas around Mount Shasta stayed cold and shaded yesterday, keeping the possibility of triggering a storm slab. This problem could be found anywhere the new snow has fallen, showing specific sensitivity in cold and shaded areas. These slabs could break up to 23 inches deep and be reactive to skis. 

Avalanche Discussion

If you plan to go into the backcountry today, approach terrain with extreme skepticism. Yesterday's spotty snow showers and intermittent sun has likely created varying avalanche conditions based off of aspect, elevation, and sun exposure. Large avalanches still lurk in the new snow and on wind loaded slopes. Today would be a good day to ski low angle terrain. If stepping into avalanche terrain, bring a partner, and remember to periodically pause and reassess conditions as appropriate.
